Training Aggressive Dogs

Dog Obedience Training – Aggressive Dogs.

Dog Obedience Training – Aggressive Dogs.

I do not believe that dogs are born aggressive. There may be exceptions, perhaps where a dog has a tumour or is in constant pain, but generally, an aggressive dog is simply the result of its environment and the owner’s ineffective dog obedience training and lack of management in the pup’s formative years.

What I mean by that is, if the dog is not to become aggressive to both humans and other dogs. It needs to be properly socialised and trained effectively to manage its self control.

These are some of the poor management and training situations I have actually witnessed in my 30 years of dog training. I am amazed at some people’s stupidity when it comes to dog ownership :-

•Dogs that are left in a yard that has a wooden paling fence and kids with sticks rattling along the outside of that fence. The dog used to go frantic and as a result developed a total dislike for small kids.

•Handlers who think it fun to encourage their pup to run up and down a wire fence having a barking slanging match with a dog on the other side of the fence. In this case the dogs on the other side of the fence were Dobermans and the pup developed a hate for any dog that looked remotely like a Doberman.

•Handlers who encourage their dogs to show aggression to people who wander past their property. Fortunately there was a strong fence between me and the Rottweiler that the owner sent to “gethim”.

•Handlers who think it is amusing to teach a puppy to be aggressive whilst eating a bone. I have seen someone deliberately teasing a pup with a bone until that the pup bit him.

•Handlers who totally fail to see the Alpha Dog syndrome developing and get bitten when trying to remove the dog from the lounge. If you have any dog showing any alpha syndromes you have to act to knock them on the head immediately.

•Handlers who train their dogs to chase squirrels, or possums, or rats but cannot stop them also chasing Pomeranians, Maltese poodles or other small furry creatures. Handlers who do not bother to teach self control or reinforce the recall and make themselves more rewarding than chasing squirrels.

•People who think it is right to discipline their dogs by either shaking the heck out the scruff or by physically throwing the dog on its back and holding the animal down by the throat.

Forcing a dog into submission is to my mind nothing short of animal cruelty. You will get far further and have a far happier relationship with your dog if you treat the dog with respect.

Dogs are intelligent animals and can learn anything we are prepared to teach them. We can teach aggression as criminals who breed for dog fighting know. Or we can train to use the dog’s intelligence to teach it anything we want to try.

If you take your pup to puppy school and dog obedience training courses from the age of 8 weeks, it is highly unlikely you will end up with any aggression problems. However, you need to keep your wits around you and ensure that you and your instructors pick up on any signs that your pup may be developing aggressive tendencies.

Should You Scold Your Dog?

Reprimanding is a type of dog training that should not be done unless necessary. It is possible that reward training for dogs has been around as long as there have been dogs to train. Early humans probably used some informal kind of reward training when taming the wolf pups that eventually evolved into modern dogs. Dogs are very much like small children and have short attention spans. See http://www.dogtraining-online.us/know-your-dog/opting-for-a-purebred-dog.html

Dogs are Simple Creatures..

But the dog is simply following its basic programming. Some collie owners acquire a family of ducks for their dog to “boss around;” this satisfies the dog’s herding instinct and the ducks don’t mind. Establishing yourself as pack leader to your dog is very important. Each dog pack only has one leader and in your case it must be you the human. Experts say that dog behaviors can be controlled through proper training. Dog behaviors are actually responses that are mostly triggered by environmental and social factors. Dog Obedience Training

Dog obedience training is one of the most important ways you can show your love for your dog. Contrary to public opinion, obedience training is not some method by which a dog learns to perform some necessary but artificial activity on command. One very good reason for implementing obedience training is to establish a foundation from which you and your dog will learn to successfully relate to one another.

Most behavioral problems are correctable with proper instruction and patient, consistent training by the dog owner. Obedience training doesn’t solve all behavior problems, but it is the foundation for solving just about any problem. The key to preventing or treating behavior problems is learning to teach the dog to redirect his natural behavior to outlets that are acceptable in the domestic setting.

Training your dog involves a routine of rules that the dog is expected to follow. Training opens up a line of communication between you and your dog. Training dogs should be fun, enriching and bond-building for both of you, if it isn’t, then you need to learn more about reward-based dog training for the benefit of both of you. Dogs are social animals and without proper training, they will behave like animals.

A good trainer will never use food as the ONLY inducement for making a dog obedient, but if your slow performer peps up when you give food, use it to overcome problems. Obedience-trained dogs have an easier life than their untrained peers. For a dog to be considered obedient rather than simply trained in obedience, it must respond reliably each time the command is given, by what is commonly known as its handler.

Dogs are pack animals and are genetically programmed to enjoy following a benevolent leader. When your dog obeys a simple request of “come here, sit,” she is showing compliance and respect for you. Effective communication is necessary when giving your dog obedience training. This is to instruct your dog about what you want them to do. Remember, an obedient dog is a happy dog.

Obedience training is the key to having a dog that is an enjoyable pet. Obedience training is one of the best things you can do for your dog or puppy and yourself. Obedience training is the key to reliable, responsible off-leash dogs. In fact, obedience training is critical in nurturing the most positive aspects of human-animal relationship. Dog obedience training is the basis for you and your best friend to have a long and happy life together. Whether your dog is young or old, large or small, calm or hyper, obedience training is a positive step toward lifelong dog and owner happiness.

HELP NEED A DECENT dog training school in essex if not some genral tips for a german shepherd?

please give me some advise i need some training tips on a german shepherd

I agree to an extent with the first answer. Check out different sites, people, etc and get some pointers. Enroll in a training class if you’d like….. however, the most important thing.. i repeat, the MOST IMPORTANT thing is to spend time with your dog!! The bonding between a dog and its handler is the most important thing because it establishes the groundwork for great communication, where you learn the limits of your dog, and how he/she learns best, and your dog gets to know you, and what you are asking of him/her. The more time you spend with your dog, and the more interaction you have, the more eager your dog will be to please you. They are social animals and need the interaction in order to develop mentally and emotionally. Just an example, my mother had a purebred shepard that was so well trained that she would stop at the street and wait for my mom before attempting to cross the street, and my mom never took her to a class. Another good source for any breed is the book “Dog Training for Dummies”~ it’s written by people who have trained many many dogs, and they know their stuff!
