Choosing The Best Dry Dog Food

By George Chao

Sometimes, the best dry dog food is the one that your dog will eat the most. It is easier to buy something that your canine will eat as opposed to having them eat dog food that may be better for them, but one that they may not necessarily like. However, there are a few things you need to consider when you walk down the pet food aisles at your local retailer.

Consider the price of the dry dog food. Often, dry dog food that are cheap or are not branded are made with ingredients like fillers and seasonings that are not necessarily good for dogs. These ingredient may be tasty, but they can be harmful to your dog. These dry dog food often have too much preservatives, which can cause your dog to develop health problems that may eventually cause them to suffer later on in life.

To increase the vitality and life expectancy of your dog, go with good quality dry dog food. You don’t really need to purchase the most expensive dry dog food there is, but it is best if you stick with dry dog food that is manufactured by a reputable dog food company and is priced reasonably.

The main ingredient in the best dry dog food is rice, corn or soybean. High quality dry dog food will also have other ingredients such as beef and chicken. Stores also sell dry dog food formulated specifically to a dog’s age. Manufacturers classify the different types of dry dog food as being for puppies, adult dogs and senior dogs. Purchasing the dry dog food that’s most suitable for your dog’s age is always important.

If you want to know what are the best dry dog foods, ask your veterinarian. Veterinarians would often recommend the branded dry dog foods. These brands are more expensive, but if you have an older dog, it may be to your advantage to pay a little more for the best dry dog food.

You will know if you’ve picked the best dry dog food by the way your dog looks and feels. When you take your dog for yearly shots, his coat should be healthy, his eyes should be clear and he should be full of energy. If your pet doesn’t look well and seems lethargic, there could be something wrong with his diet. It is always wise to keep notes about what your dog is eating on a daily basis. This way, a veterinarian can diagnose your dog more quickly and recommend the best dry dog food for your pet.

Like any living beings dogs also depend heavily on nutrient food to keep them fit and healthy and do the works and wonders that you expect from them.

Food For Your Pomeranian

By Bruno

When it comes to food and nutrition, the Pomeranian is among the dogs needing low maintenance. However, it always helps to take a little care, so that the dog is always in good health.

Pomeranians tend to be extremely fussy about the food they eat. While you might want them to eat a specially formulated food, they might prefer to eat your daily food. Thus, it is necessary for the owner to be aware of the dog diet basics. This way, he can ensure that the Pomeranian gets all the nutrition he needs even if not through a conventional diet.

Meat or Plants: Dogs, being carnivores, are likely to reject all plant food and prefer meat. However, each dog is different. There have been instances where Pomeranians prefer to eat vegetables to meaty dog food formulations. However, you should strive to keep the Pomeranian’s diet more focused on meat-based food, rather than plant food.

Pomeranian Loving Plant Food: If your Pomeranian is among the few that prefer plants to meat, you might be fraught with worry. After all, you might wonder whether your Pomeranian gets all the nutrition it needs through the plant food and fruits that he eats. However, you don’t need to worry. There are special formulations of half-digested plant food for dogs available in the market. These will appeal to your dog, while causing no trouble with his digestive system.

Allergies to Food: At the same time, make sure that the dog food contains plants to which your dog is not allergic. Some dogs shows signs of a problem when they eat corn or soy beans in their food. A good way to tell if your dog is allergic to the food it eats is by checking to see whether he licks his paw frequently or rubs his nose on the carpet. The worst-case scenario would probably be when your Pomeranian vomits after eating his plant-based food. If you suspect that your Pomeranian is allergic to plant based food, do not bother giving him any vegetables or fresh fruits, because they will only cause him trouble. Instead, feed your Pomeranian raw turkey or chicken meat, or even cooked meat.

Teething Issues: You should always ensure that the food you feed your Pomeranian dog does not result in tooth problems. It is best to provide the Pomeranian with dry food, as the dog gets all the nutrition it requires, while avoiding any tooth problems. This is another reason why food eaten by humans is not healthy for a Pomeranian. ‘People food’ can lead to many health problems in the dog, including liver diseases and tooth problems. Specialized dog food is the best choice of food to provide the Pomeranian, as it keeps the dog’s gums and teeth healthy.

Puppy Food: Pomeranian puppies need the same diet that their adult counterparts require. However, the owner should not thrust the raw food to the puppy immediately, because the puppy’s stomach needs to develop further before it can handle and digest raw meat. Instead, introduce the raw food gradually, little by little in his diet. Give the puppy dry and cooked food in little portions at each meal. You can provide him with cooked lamb or cooked chicken. After fifteen minutes have passed, put away any uneaten food. For adult and puppy Pomeranians, you should always leave them with adequate amounts of fresh water at all times.

The biggest reason why Pomeranian owners cannot maintain a proper diet for their Pomeranians is that, these dogs tend to eat more than required when they like the food. However, owners should be aware that Pomeranians do not need large amounts of food. They only need to eat the adequate, healthy amount, and drink a lot of water. Since each dog is different and individualistic, it is best to consult with the vet and come up with a nutritious diet for your Pomeranian.

Helpful advice about Feeding a Dog

Is your dog overweight? If so, you’re not alone. In the U.S. today some 17 million dogs, or at least 30 percent of pet U.S. dogs, are estimated to be overweight or obese. Many people believe that if they love their dog it means that they should never allow their dog to be hungry, not even for a moment. Unfortunately, if you keep your dog stuffed with food all the time you are guaranteed to make him overweight. And that’s not healthy for him.

The single biggest reason that dogs become overweight is because of overfeeding. This is followed closely by giving your dog too many unhealthy treats and not giving your dog enough exercise. All of these reasons for dogs being overweight or obese are preventable.

Many people are not even aware that their dog is overweight. Many veterinarians report that they see overweight dogs in their offices and the owners believe the dogs are a healthy weight.

If you aren’t sure whether your dog is overweight or not you can compare your dog to a dog weight chart. A dog weight chart shows images of dogs in varying degrees of fitness, ranging from emaciated to grossly obese. You should be able to find where your dog fits on the chart. You can then read the description and see how your dog rates in terms of fitness. You can also ask your veterinarian to evaluate your dog’s weight.

If you’d like to check your dog’s weight yourself you can run your hands along your dog’s side. You should always be able to feel your dog’s ribs. You should not be able to see the ribs but, in a properly fit dog you should be able to feel them. If you can’t feel the ribs or find them, then your dog is overweight. Your dog should also have a “tuck up” behind the ribs. This is the dog’s waist area. Fit dogs do have a waist or tuck up behind the ribs. If your dog does not have a slight to moderate tuck up then it’s likely that your dog is overweight. Finally, when viewed from above, your dog should not have a flat, broad back like a table top. You shouldn’t be able to set a tray on your dog’s back! If you can then your dog is definitely overweight.

If you are concerned about your dog’s weight there are some good ways to help him lose his extra pounds.

First, make sure you’re controlling his portions. Measure the amount of food you’re feeding your dog. Use the feeding amounts suggested by the dog food maker as a guide and then watch your dog’s condition. Some dogs gain weight on these suggested amounts. Some dogs lose weight. Be prepared to adjust your dog’s food rations accordingly.

Don’t free feed your dog. Free feeding is leaving food down for your dog 24/7. If you leave food down at all times your dog will eat whether he’s hungry or not. This means he’ll gain weight. Feed your dog two or three regular meals per day.

Get rid of your dog’s unhealthy snacks. Many snacks contain sugar, salt and fats which can add extra calories to your dog’s diet. The rule of thumb is that you need to deduct these calories from your dog’s daily calorie allowance. You shouldn’t be feeding your dog more than 10 percent of his calories in snacks. Better yet, toss out the unhealthy snacks completely and give your dog healthy snacks. You can give your dog carrots, cucumber, apple slices or popcorn as snacks. These treats have very few calories and most dogs love them.

Help your dog get more exercise. If your dog is overweight or obese he’s probably not very active at the moment. You still need to encourage him to get some exercise. Start taking him for some slow, moderate walks. Ten to fifteen minute walks around your neighborhood are fine to begin. As your dog starts to lose some weight he will feel a little more like exercising. You can gradually build up your walks. Walk for longer sessions and go farther. Once your dog has reached a good weight your dog should be able to walk for 45-50 minutes. Don’t rush your dog or try to go too far, too fast. It takes time to build up your dog’s fitness level.

Finally, don’t try to make your dog lose too much weight too fast. The only healthy way for your dog to lose weight it to lose it slowly. You should try to help your dog lose between .5 and 2 percent of his body weight per week. This often works out to just a few ounces for a dog. Don’t be worried if your dog seems to be losing weight very slowly. This is the healthiest way for your dog to diet.

Remember that your dog didn’t become overweight or obese overnight and he won’t lose the weight all at once. Look for slow and steady progress. If you control your dog’s portions, change unhealthy treats for healthy ones, and encourage your dog to get more exercise, your dog will lose weight and become fitter. Dogs who maintain a fit weight live longer, healthier lives. That’s what we all want for our pets.
