Not very many weeks ago, I came home with a dog, one that someone had abandoned. I love animals and am a sucker for one that has been thrown away. My wife, not the dog lover that I am, was able to change my way of thinking when the dog made a mess in her house!
He did not know the rules of the house, but I did. Doggie was going to live in the great outdoors whether he land I liked it or not.
You know I could not let the poor dog hang around the neighborhood. He had to have his own place, so he would know where home is.
My first job was to find some dog kennel plans so I could build doggie a home of his own. I went online to take a look. Wow! So many options it was difficult to narrow down to one I thought would fit my talents and doggie’s needs. Finally, I chose a house with dog run, just in case doggie needed to exercise.
After I had chosen my plan, I looked over the list of materials needed to make doggie a place that would be comfortable in all kinds of weather.
Pressure treated wood would hold up really well. But I knew doggie is a chewer and the chemicals used to pressure treat the wood would be bad for him. I could, however, use the pressure treated wood in portions of the building doggie could not reach, such as the frame.
On the rest of the building, I would use either a composite building material or a type of wood, like cedar, that holds up in all kinds of weather and is not prone to rotting.
Let me recommend that you choose a set of plans that will give your pet comfort the year round. During winter months or the rainy season, he will need a place where he can go to get out of the rain or snow. During the winter months, you will want to make him a bed out of straw or old blankets.
And, during the summer months, he will need some shade and lots of breezes. You will want your kennel to provide some shade and cross ventilation.
Many pets, like mine, are left alone for long periods of time while the family is at work or school. I would recommend that you choose a set of plans that will give your pet the things he needs, including space to move about.
The dog kennel with dog run was a good choice for the abandoned dog I brought home to be our new pet. The dog run gives doggie freedom to run around a little when he gets bored in the house or the shade.
Now that my dog kennel with dog run is complete, I do not worry that doggie will be sent away, nor get into trouble with the neighbors.
I found easy-to-follow plans for my dog kennel as well as thousands of plans for other kinds of sheds or out buildings. Go to http://www.shedplansandprojects.info today to find the perfect plan for the project you have in mind.

When the time comes for the annual holiday travel season more and more pet owners are looking for alternatives to the traditional kennel boarding services. Many dog and cat owners are willing to go the extra mile if it means their furry friends are kept in a comfortable and caring environment. Pet hotels and even doggy holiday resorts are becoming more and more popular and many offer a level of luxury to pets that exceeds what the owners themselves enjoy while away. Posh suites with inclusive grooming care, private runs and gourmet pet food are only a few of the perks available for those pets whose owners are willing to pay the right price. However more and more owners are taking a different route, choosing to not board their dogs and cats in boarding centers – irrespective of how posh the facilities which are available – instead many owners select the relatively new, yet fairly simple concept of home boarding.
Home boarding is as straightforward as it sounds. Dogs and cats, instead of being placed in cages at a boarding facility are temporarily relocated to a pet sitter’s home. The dogs are placed in a loving, family environment which is best suited to maintaining the pet’s regular routine. Dogs are walked, played with and fed according to the specifications of the owner. Satisfied owners insist the personalized and loving attention dogs receive through home boarding helps the animals maintain a calm and relaxed attitude while their owners are away. The feeling is that pets home boarded end up happier and healthier, both while the owner is away and after he or she comes back.
Dogs kept in boarding facilities are often walked infrequently, spending many hours a day alone in a small room or plastic cage. Home-boarded dogs live in the company of their sitter and are hardly ever left alone. Home boarding proponents and sitters like to stress that although the animal’s stay with them is temporary the pets are treated as though they are part of the pet sitter’s household, and cared for with the same amount of love and kindness as the sitter’s own pets.
Although the original method of finding someone to home board your pet was a laborious search through classified listings or by word of mouth a greater and greater number of pet sitting services will arrange a home board for your dog or cat for a small fee. The convenience of such services is great, especially when you consider the number of precautionary steps the pet sitting service might offer. For example, a pet owner might not have the time to interview perspective sitters and or inspect the homes their pets will be staying in. Pet sitting services maintain an up to date list of prospective sitters and will pre-screen both the sitter and their home on the owner’s behalf. Pet sitters are chosen for their love of animals and trustworthy level of responsibility. Homes are judged based on their comfort, cleanliness and appropriate facilities based on the pets to be boarded (E.G. Many services insist those boarding dogs have a fenced outdoor area for the dog to exercise in safely.)
Another benefit of choosing a pet sitter through a service is insurance. Most reputable pet sitting service providers will offer some sort of insurance protection which can benefit both the pet sitter and the pet owner. Should your pet accidentally cause any damage to the pet sitter’s home it’s re-assuring to know it will be covered by insurance. Also, many pet sitting services make arrangements between pet sitters and local veterinarians to make sure an injured or sick pet will be cared for immediately and by a competent professional, which is sure to provide even more peace of mind for pet owners on holiday.
Published dog care expert and long time proponent of home Dog Boarding Newcastle resident Arlen Tooscombe, summed up the home boarding philosophy in his book Stay, Good Boy thusly, “We would never put our children in a cage or hotel room for a week only to convenience ourselves, why do so many feel it is right to do it to our furred and feathered friends. These are our companions. We appreciate their companionship and they appreciate ours. Why not allow them some caring companionship when we can’t be with them? It is not so much a treat, as a responsibility.”

Keeping your home clean when you have pets can be a particular challenge. Not only do they make a lot of mess, but you don’t want to use dangerous chemicals where they may end up licking them up or otherwise coming into contact with them. Using a portable steam cleaner for your hard surfaces can help keep your home looking as clean as it was before you had any animals living with you, while avoiding the use of cleaning solutions.
A steam mop, or the floor attachments on a portable device, does a great job at getting up hair off your floors. They usually have microfiber pads on the bottom that do a great job of collecting them, that with the hot moisture coming out of the machine makes sure that all the hair gets picked up. These pads are reusable, too, so you won’t need to keep buying new supplies to keep your floors clean.
If your pet spends a lot of time in the windows there is a squeegee attachment on most units that make cleaning windows and mirrors a lot easier. This is one area that with traditional methods is hard to really get clean without chemicals, and the steam cleaner makes that possible—which is great for the dog that sticks their nose against the window.
Your pets kennel, or carrier, can get very dirty over time. With pet hair, mud from outside, and other build up this area can be a real chore. With the detail brushes and other attachments it can get a little bit easier, though. This is one area where I really hate to use any chemicals because the animals will be spending a lot of time here, but you need to do a lot of cleaning, so having a machine can be a real relief.
In all of these ways and more using a hard surface steam cleaner when you have pets can be a real convenient way to make sure your house stays clean, and your pets stay safe.
