Buying Considerations For A Dog Wheelchair

Also called dog carts, dog wheelchairs are a huge help for the physically handicapped dogs for them to have a better life. Should your dog have problems with mobility due to injuries, disease or congenital conditions, it is advisable that you get your little buddy a wheelchair. Wheelchairs for dogs will help your pet to have better mobility and to prevent further bone damage and pain. If you are planning to buy your pet dog a wheelchair, here are some features that you should look for.

Lightweight aluminum frame – Dog mobility aids are often held stable with harnessed frames that support the pet’s body and the linked wheels. When you are searching for a cart for your injured dog, it is best to select the ones that are from light materials and those that have aluminum frames.

Picking a lightweight dog cart will help to avoid further injury.. Since it is light aluminum frames are not likely to add tension to your dog’s back and will not likely cause unneeded stress as well. Wheelchair frames that are made from heavy metal could injure your dog and worsen its existing condition. Aside from this by using the light wheelchair your dog will find it easier to work and move around, encouraging him to use the cart all the more. Carts that are made of aluminum frames can also give your dog a more stable support since they are more durable and can even hold larger dogs like the German shepherds.

Back support saddle – It is also imperative that you select a canine wheelchair that has a rear support saddle in order to make your dog’s life and yours easier. Dog wheelchairs with back support saddle support your pet’s underbelly. The risk of strain is significantly decreased when the dogs are properly supported from back to the underbelly and at the same time your dog will be more than comfortable while inside the cart.

Adjustable harness and straps – Pick the wheelchair with adjustable harness for these handy straps are designed to hold the mobility of the dog wheelchair in sync with that of your dog’s. Harness and straps attached to the wheelchair may also serve as additional support. Besides allowing movement flexibility, this also decreases the threats from ill-fitted wheelchairs.

– Start training inside with your dog on leash.  Say your dog’s name followed by the word “come.” Do it in such a way that will attract or inspire your pet to come (using excited tone, having treats prepared).

– Praise him as fast as he comes to you.

– If your Labrador does not come, tug the leash a little to draw in and inspire him to come.  Remember not to tug the leash cruelly to stop your dog from associating the command with something negative.

– After he has mastered the command inside, gradually train the command outside and off leash in a fenced-in yard.

– Use the command frequently (during dinner, playtime, to give treats) and never use it to call your dog for negative things like punishment or baths.

– When you are teaching the come command, or any other command actually, and your dog doesn’t respond, do not chase him around.  Though it’s driving you nuts, wait till he comes and if he does, never give punishment for it will only associate the command to something negative.

– Labradors are intelligent dogs but don’t expect this command can be mastered in one session only.  Commence with the basic and steadily build on it.  Training sessions should additionally be short as well as pleasurable.

Is Pet smart training any good?

I am putting my chihuahua(5months old) in training classes through pet smart and wanted to know is they any good.I tried training my chihuahua but i think i went the wrong way about training her and confused her.

It really depends on the trainer. Some are great and have lots of experience, but others just don’t have the experience and only know what is in the curriculum they get from the chain. I personally LOVE our trainer. She has over 10 years experience in training and she really goes above and beyond. She has a great answer to any question, related to the curriculum or not. But as another poster said, you should go in a meet the trainers so you can know you are getting a great one.

Our trainer was on vacation for a week and we had another trainer from the store, and she was clueless, and it was pretty obvious … so just meeting with them for a few minutes can tell you a lot and help your decision.

I know someone else in our class that has a bunch of dogs (all pure bred from reputable breeders … she just waited for 2 years for her new Golden Retriever puppy) who has been to private training center with her other dogs and she chose the same class at PetSmart as us, so I think that says something about our trainer.

For the price, it’s a great idea to get you started. It’s not like you can “screw up” your dog, as long as you do your homework from class every week and keep it up consistently, any type of training will do wonders. Not everyone can afford $300+ for 6 sessions with a trainer. Anything you can do, for any price to train your dog, makes you a great pet owner!

Good Luck!
