Puppy Proofing Your Home Can Prevent Chewing Accidents

Young puppies usually are natural chewing machines. Nearly anything within their reach is  fair game: your sandals, couches, kid’s toys and games, power wires, sticks, Television  remote controls; if it is loose and readily available, it can be demolished.

Considering that  it is a natural instinct for your pup to chew, it’s your job to  steer the pup to what precisely may be chewed and exactly what cannot be chewed. Consequently  your foremost duty would be to puppy proof your home by keeping the puppy restricted  in a dog crate while you’re not home in addition to limiting their free range to the  puppy proof sections when you are home.

We learned the hard way once when  our daughter left her bedroom door ajar and our Golden Retriever commenced  to chew my antique dollhouse as well as the handmade furnishings and turned them into toothpicks. It  seriously appeared as if a bomb had been dropped on the dollhouse with  bits and pieces of my miniature furniture spread all over the floor. Crayons  and telephone books were additionally Chris’s favored things to chew on and my  Labrador, Jake, coveted magazines and books

Any time you do  find that an item has been wrecked by your dog, your very first  response would be to discipline the dog. Unfortunately, the dog does not have any clue precisely what  you happen to be punishing him for, even if you are waving the cherished artifact  in your hand, after all, anything within reach is fair game and their memory  is very short. You merely must ignore the dog and tidy up the clutter.

Puppies  need to chew simply because they are teething. Gnawing on objects gives them  some comfort to their sensitive gums as well as dislodges their baby teeth so their  mature teeth can come in. As soon as their teeth are in, then they chew  because they may be bored, trying to play or even in search of attention from you.

Furnish  your puppy with ample safe chew toys, along the lines of Kong Toys, dental  chews, Greenies, and digestible rawhides. Do not ever supply your puppy real bones  to chew on. They may crack their teeth, or even splinter when ingested. A  variety of chew toys keeps the dog engaged. When presenting your puppy a  brand new chew toy, monitor him to make sure the item is not shredded and  swallowed, especially latex chew toys or stuffed toys with squeakers.  Air Kong squeakers are usually Jake’s most desired chew toy they usually have a tendency to stand  up to his chewing better than every other toy we have tried using.

Always keep  all objects picked up off the floor and out of reach from your puppy,  including books, magazines, controllers, telephone books and Harry Potter  books, (these are just a few items that have been destroyed by my puppies over the years).

Pertaining to  much larger possessions, along the lines of couches, reclining chairs along with furniture, you could try using  non-toxic bitter sprays which can be sprayed on the larger sized pieces.

Should you catch your dog chewing on something they shouldn’t, say “No” or  “Leave It”, and then replace the item with a chew toy. You have to be  vigilant when monitoring your puppy so that you can direct him to exactly what should  be chewed and what is off limits.

Supply your dog with his own “toy  box”. This can be a small box or a basket to put his / her toys in. My dog  thinks it is a fantastic game any time I vacuum the rug and set all his toys  away in the basket. He then he commences to pull all his toys out and  plays with them 1 by 1 the minute the cleaning is finished.

A few  dogs chew stemming from separation anxiety. This particular subject matter is covered more in  depth in a separate article. Your veterinarian can also help with some  medication to help you calm the dog while you are re-training your pet to be left  alone. Crate training your puppy when they are younger will help eliminate  separation anxiety from developing when they are older.

Bear in mind,  chewing mishaps are generally your carelessness for not watching your puppy faithfully or  granting free roaming while you might be absent. Give your dog an abundance of his  own toys to chew on so he will probably leave other things alone. Praise the pup when  he or she is actually chewing on their toys and you should never scold or yell at the dog any time you  come across a cherished item chewed on while you were not watching. Your pup has no  memory after the event to be able to connect the destroyed item to your ranting and could  lead to more harm than good

As far as my dollhouse furniture, I was  able to save a few pieces, and I procured another Harry Potter book to  take the place of the one that had been demolished. We also learned to keep the bedroom  doors shut, and also we transferred all the books to a “no dogs allowed” room. I  advise you view your home from the eyes of your dog and eliminate  tempting things out of their reach. Puppies can be shown just what could be  destroyed and what is off limits, if the puppy parent is there to guide  them.
