Your Questions About Dog Coats

Mark asks…

Dog Coats?

What is do you feel is the best place to buy dog coats? I have a few links below…but if you buy yours at different places be sure to tell me!

http://www.dogcoat.com/

http://www.ruffwear.com/

Brian answers:

Does your city have any pet “Boutiques”? We have a few of them here in Western Washington State. I find they have better quality and variety than mainstream Petco, Petsmart, and the like. Look on e-Bay, too and maybe even craigslist.

William asks…

Dog coats?

I have a white Jack Russell that is short haired and gets cold very easy outside. I like to run him while I’m riding my bicycle. Will he overheat in the coat while running him with it on?
Should I just run him without the coat? Will the difference in temperatures make him sick?

Brian answers:

If your dog is running, that should be plenty to keep him warm. I have short haired dogs and as long as we keep them moving, they never get cold, even if it is FREEZING! Even just walking was enough for them to stay warm, so if your dog is going to be running, a coat shouldn’t be necessary. You may want to bring it along just incase, but I would think it would over heat him.

Betty asks…

Machine knitting patterns to make dog coats and jumpers?

I am a machine knitter and I also have 2 dogs. I train dog obedience.
I would like to make and sell dog coats and jumpers. I have the models and the potential clientele.
My problem where do I find for free although I don’t paying something some basic machine knitting patterns to get me started.

Brian answers:

Is this what you are after?

If it is then go to the downloads section in the left column and download the free trial software.(there are some limits to the free program but time use and printing are not limited)

You can create and print patterns for hand knits / machine knits and crochet – all you have to do is knit a test swatch, enter this info into the software and choose the size and style you want and then select print

there is also a yahoo group for this software.

Hope this helps

Jenny asks…

I have about 10 hand knitted dog coats in small and medium?

Where can I send these coats? Is there a rescue dogs home which will accept smaller coats? I know about the Geyhound rescue but they use very large coats so that wouldn’t do.
I don’t want to discard them or sell them on ebay as I am busy with another business at present.

Brian answers:

Why not donate them to a local animal shelter who l am sure would be pleased to use them for sick cats and dogs or if you cannot find one get in touch with your local veterinary surgeon or R.S.P.C.A.. I am sure they would be pleased to use them and maybe could sell some in there shop. Also you could knit some for the cats protection league to us and sell in there shop it all helps there funds. You could also knit other things for them to sell plus other charities like unmarried mothers and women’s refuge so good luck keep knitting.

Mandy asks…

Does anyone have crochet patterns for dog coats?

I saw a cute dog coat at work the other day and it was crocheted. Does anyone have a pattern or know where I can find one?

Brian answers:

I did a search a few weeks ago and couldn’t find much out there, unfortunately. Here are a couple sweater/coat-type things:

http://www.crochetnmore.com/thedoghouse.htm

http://www.doggoneknit.com/patterns/crochet/onepiecesolid.html

http://www.crochetnmore.com/dogsweater.htm

I ended up trying the last one because it didn’t have sleeves or armholes and therefore wasn’t as complicated. Here is my doggie in the finished product:

Ken asks…

I am looking for the maker of waterproof dog coats that I saw at Geelong market about 2 years ago. Need 1 more

The coats were an oilskin type with polarfleece or flannelette on the underside. I purchased 2 at the Steampacket Market in Geelong about 2 years ago and I’ve lost them in my house move. Does anyone know who the seller may have been and possibly how to contact them?? My 2 pooches are getting a little cold outside while I’m at work and they were the best dog coats I have seen.

Robert asks…

Why do some black dog coats get sun burned and get a rusty color why other black coats don’t?

I have noticed that in my three black/white Siberian Huskies. One is still black and white while two of them have rusty spots due to much sun. Any ideas why some coats get sun burned and others don’t?

Brian answers:

This is an interesting question. :)

In Siberians specifically, a lot of it depends on whether or not the black dog is red-factored. By that, I mean whether or not it has genes for red coat in its background. Black dogs with “red” genes seem to have a little bit of that red in their coat, which means that, when the black coat dies or gets burnt, it will turn brownish. Dogs who are not red-factored (do not carry the gene for red coloring) do not have this problem.

It is a well-known fact in the Siberian world that red coats sunburn easily. So it would make sense that this “red tint” in a black coat would burn and make the coat look brown.

I have a black/white Champion male who is out of two grey/white parents. However, his coat does burn brown in the sun, and he does produce red in his litters. Red is a recessive color, and so both parents must carry it in order for a puppy to be red.

I also had a black/white female out of a grey/white parent and a dark red/white parent who burned brown in the sun.

However, I have black/agouti dogs with no red-factoring who never burn brown.

This may be more info than you wanted. But I wouldn’t chalk the burnt coat up to any mineral deficiencies in your dogs, especially if you know for a fact that the two dogs in question come from a red parent.

Hope this helps!

Your Questions About Leather Dog Collars

Jenny asks…

Are leather dog collars better than nylon?

Do leather collars cause less irritation around the dogs neck?

I try to remove his collar every night to give him a break, but it seems his nylon (at least I think it’s nylon) collar is irritating his skin (throat area). And no, it’s not too tight!

Brian answers:

Dogs are not allergic to nylon…she is wrong….people use nylon cuz some dogs are allergic to polypro webbing….thats why they use nylon….but the polypro is more durable….wont fade, wont lose color, wont get moldy, is water proof….but can irritate so they use nylon…nylon does fade, loose color,is not water proof, does get moldy ,does fray….but a thick hard leather collar can rub to causing irritation….leather is no more durable to that of polypro collars…nylon is not the best choice…..so its an even tie with leather / polypro….although polypro can come in many colors…i like the rustic look of the leather colars:)

Betty asks…

Mendota Leather Dog collars and water?

I just bought my dog a Mendota leather collar, and was wondering if it is safe for the leather for it to be in water constantly?

Reason being is that my fiance and I take our dog to the lake for hours a day just about every weekend. So should I take his collar off for swim time? Or will the leather be ok and stay pretty and healthy?

Brian answers:

I would probably take the collar off while the dog is in the lake, just to be on the safe side. It would probably be fine, I just wouldn’t take the chance…

Robert asks…

needing a store that sells leather dog collars with a mettal name plate?

A srore in MO that sell’s leather dog collars with a metal name plate.

Brian answers:

Petco, Inc. If they have one in Missouri.

Nancy asks…

Where to get undyed leather dog collar?

Hi! I’m looking for a natural leather collar for my dog. The collar she has now is pink dyed leather and I notice that the dye gets on her fur when the collar gets wet, which I think is irritating her skin. I prefer a leather buckle collar because she has had a nylon adjustable collar and it gets too loose if she pulls on the leash. So if anyone has any suggestions for where I can find an untreated leather collar (also free of tanning chemicals, etc.) I would appreciate it!

Thanks!

Brian answers:

IN the first place you mentioned “free of tanning chemicals, etc.” that’s not possible all leather is tanned using either chemicals or vegetable based tanning agents , so you would require veggie tanned leather.. Otherwise th e will not become leather but remain cow skin and rot away in three weeks. I do know what you mean about Nylon and cheep plastic fasteners JUNK and I do understand how not only “dyed” leathers but also ” Latigos” used in tack for horses and dyed under pressure can still stain the coat when the leather gets wet…. Do a google search for NAtural leather dog collars …

Mary asks…

I want to start my own company and need to buy leather dog collars for cheap …how can I find wholesalers?Thx

Brian answers:

You can go to www.petedge.com or www.ryans.com..
Or just google pet supplys wholesale..

Helen asks…

Where can I buy a roll of leather to make dog collars/harness?

Brian answers:

Your Questions About Enlarged Kidney In Dogs

Carol asks…

My dog has been diagnosed with an enlarged heart?

Sissy is a cocker spanial/beagle mix. She is 10 years old. For almost 2 weeks she started coughing (not everyday), and lost some appetite. Took her to the vet and they did a chest x-ray. She has an enlarged heart and it’s starting to push up on trac., but no heart murmur, which surprised the vet, also he feels I brought in early enough. She is now on 2 meds and I have an appointment for her to do an ultrasound on wednesday. Enalapril and Salix (he feels using Salix will prevent any fluid from starting, he said no fluid showed up). He said this will slow her heart down and not have it work so hard, which will make the heart shrink down some, but it will never shrink down to the normal size it should be. Her kidneys are good as well.

Sissy’s appetite is good again, she’s eating like before. My whole problem is, I don’t know how to take this emotionally. It hit me hard last night after the day settled down. Anymore info will be greatly appreciated.

Brian answers:

Sounds like you have a good vet. You are doing all the right things. Catching it early and staring medication will extend her life and make it a more comfortable one. Relax and follow your vets instructions. I had a dog who lived for >6 years after staring treatment. He died of causes not related to his heart. Did he test her for Heart worms? They can cause an enlarged heart with out a murmur. Enjoy her.

Sandra asks…

Enlarged heart and fluid in the lungs?

Over the holidays, my collie (age 10-12 possibly) began having some problems breathing. She is still eating great, as active as a senior dog with arthritis can be and is still going to the bathroom fine. I took her to the vets where they ran several blood tests and took x-rays of her lungs and heart. Her liver and kidneys are working well and her heartbeat was steady and strong, but the x-rays showed some fluid in her lungs and a slightly rounded (enlarged) heart. They gave her Lasix to reduce the fluid retention and sent the x-rays to Ohio State veterinary hospital. The Lasix is working, but after not taking it for a few days has labored breathing again. While I am still waiting on the results, I was wondering besides heart disease, could anything else cause this? Also, she is now on an all natural, corn and wheat free diet as well as eating plain, unsweetened yogurt with flax seed oil and a good probiotic but is their anything else I could give her to help make her stronger.

Brian answers:

That is a good diet you have chosen for her. Make sure she has plenty of water.

A slightly rounded (enlarged) heart) can be caused by “Valvular defects, tumors, heartworms, heart beat abnormalities, and damaged to the muscle itself” It tends to occur in older large breed dogs.

The Lasix should continue for as long as the Vet recommends. As for the yogurt, not too much. In general the recommendation is no more than around a tablespoon full per day. Some folks give yogurt as a treat every couple of days.

“Some veterinarians administer coenzymeQ (30mg tid) because of its beneficial effects in people with dilated cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease)”

Note: tid = three times a day

The only other thing I can think of is to give her a lot of love and attention. A happier dog is a stronger dog. Good luck

Paul asks…

Does anyone really know if dogs know when they are dying, people talk of a sixth sense animals have?

I had to put my beloved dog to sleep 3 days ago due to him having an enlarged and twisted intestine, his kidneys were also in bad shape and he suffered a lot of neurological distress (severe epilepticus). He was quite sick and had complete loss of apetite for his last two days before i had to make the gut wrenching decision to say goodbye, i am left wondering whether during these last 2 days he was aware of the fact that he was dying? And also do dogs go away to die?? He also had very strange behaviour his last 2 days of getting as far away from his familiar surroundings as our fence would permit, if anyone has any answers it would be greatly appreciated

Brian answers:

Yes, I would say he knew. When a dog is dying they often do things that are not normal for them. By getting as far away from his familiar surroundings, he was probably looking for a comfortable place to die.

So sorry for your loss…Even though he had so many problems, I’m sure it was hard to say goodbye…

You’ll see him again someday, he’ll be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge.

*****

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

Robert asks…

i recently had to euthinize my pitull, do you know any pitbull lovers who i can talk to for emotional support?

when i met my boyfriend 12yrs. ago he had 2 pitbulls, Sheba (mother) and Garth (Sheba’s son). these dogs were Rudy’s (my bf) life and after time became my life as well. a couple of yrs. ago we had to put Sheba down and the pain that we felt in our hearts was unbearable. she had bloat and bloat is fatal. since then we have done everything and anything to make Garth happy and content. he had never been apart from his mom (never) and he clearly missed her cause every day he looked for her. May 26, 2007 Rudy and i were facing the decision of euthinization yet again and had only minutes to decide. Garth had an enlarged heart and his kidneys were failing. we decided not to let him suffer. although Rudy and i do share the same grief and pain it is to hard and sad for us to talk to eachother about our loss. do you know someone who can help me understand and deal with the pain i feel in my heart. our dogs were our children and we miss them so very much.

Brian answers:

Hi sweetie, i know your pain all too well. When i left a 13 year relationship, my ex said that if he really wanted to hurt me, he would just let my wolves die. Well he did just that. They needed medical attention and he refused to take them in. I was in Mo, at the time. He just let them die. I was so pissed with him i couldn’t see straight for a long time. I now have a new wonderful man in my life and we both have pits, male and female. I feel for both of you and if you would like to talk and share pix’s here’s my e-mail… Iam2tiger@yahoo.com

P.S. My wolves were mother and son also. She died of a stroke, actually 2, and he died of a blood clot on his lungs. My ex is a useless bastard.

Gina, please e-mail me anytime you need to talk, or just cry a little. I totally understand and i’m for you.

Lisa asks…

Did we do the right thing in putting our dog to sleep?

He was 14 years old, a poodle. He was overweight, had severely high glucose levels, enlarged liver, enlarged kidney. He was dehydrated, he could hardly lift his head. He was my elderly parents dog. I’m thinking that if I had taken him to an emergency pet hospital they could have saved him. The vet was surprised that he wasn’t in a coma. Did I make the right decision? I feel so awful about it.
He also had arthritis and cataracts.
Every answer so far from each of you has been extremely helpful. It’s been 2 days now and I realize that I was called at the last minute to take him to the vet; we had to rush and find a vet that was even still open; I was not mentally or emotionally prepared and did not feel well. I’d never taken a seriously sick animal to the vet before.
What I’ve learned is that a person has to go about this slowly with much knowledge and get many opinions before ever considering letting an animal be put to death. When they’re gone, they are gone.
Nothing will stop the knowledge in my own heart that I have killed love when I was part of that decision. All the comforting words cannot stop that truth.

Brian answers:

You made the right choice, he was very sick and treatment may have just stressed him out, if it was even possible. Don’t feel bad, he isn’t suffering now.

Please don’t listen to voiceofreason – even if treatment was possible his quality of life was next to nothing. It would have being cruel and shelfish to keep him alive like that.

Its a hard decison to make, but you did the right thing.

Second opinions may be ok in some situations, such as voiceofreasons, but your dog was suffering a lot and 14 is pretty old, arthrities, cataracts, liver, kidney, weight and glucose problems – treatment would have just drawn out the process.

You did the right thing and don’t let anyone make you feel guilty about it.

Mark asks…

No improvement in urinary tract infection male beagle 11yo?

I have an 11-year-old male beagle who is being treated for a urinary tract infection. The vet said his urinary test did not look like an infection and did an ultrasound for kidney stones and cancer, but found nothing other than an enlarged prostate. He put the dog on two antibiotics (one before the ultrasound and a second added afterward) and assumed that since he found nothing else, it must be an infection. He’s been on both medications for a week+.

Lately I haven’t seen any blood in his urine, a very good thing – but I could simply be missing it. He still groans when he pees and has to stop and start multiple times. It still comes in little spurts, which seems to put it at a weird angle because he’s been getting it all over his legs and belly.

He’ll finish both medications early next week, but doesn’t seem to be better. He’s shaky during the day and doesn’t play or chew his bones anymore. He’s still straining to pee and having pain. I know he’s not done with the meds, but I thought symptoms were supposed to improve about halfway through a course of antibiotics (at least in people, and why should dogs be different)? I’m concerned that he’ll finish the meds and still be sick. Look at my previous questions if you want a comprehensive list of his symptoms. I’m afraid this means it really isn’t an infection, and that’s why the vet didn’t see it in the test. What can this mean? What should I do to make him feel better, and what can I do to make him get well faster if this is an infection?
Hm, he is a bit chubby (not much, but a little). But would kidney problems cause painful urination and straining? I can see that it might produce the blood and stuff, but….

I’ll look up the symptoms and see if my dog exhibits any. Thanks so much for the heads up.

Brian answers:

Sounds like a Urinary tract Infection to me..What meds is he on? Could you try feeding him can food? What type of food is he on?If he’s on grainy dog food try something grain free. You can try giving him 1/2 tsp of Apple Cider Vinegar one time daily for three days straight.Since he’s on meds you might want to get some probiotics for him. When you give him ACV be sure he eats first before you give it to him.

Jenny asks…

My Dog’s Poison or Not, I’ve Got To Fine Out?

In Dec, 2005 my 10 yr old Rott passed & in April, 2006 my 10 yr old Lab had to be put down. They both displayed the same symptoms it took about 7 to 10 days. Both started to swell up, legs included. They slowly stopped eating, dark blood in the stool & runny in the last couple days both started going down in the hind-end and would howl tryin to get up after sitting. They both began acting lethorgic and very much in pain. Unable to pay a vet at that time a drug Co Metacam paid for an autopsy on my Rott but do to the time frame 30 days after the resultes were not clear but modules were noted on her liver and the right kidney was enlarged. My Lab I got to the vet, a light brown fluid was pulled off from around his chest he continuned to decline and I had him put down. My vet wrote a statement for the Police stating (toxins could not be ruled out) due to the time frame and not knowing what toxin to test for no toxology was done. I’ve got to fine out, Please any HELP or answers. TY Naosbbo

Brian answers:

Since both your dogs were affected in and around the same time period I would have to wonder about poisoning of some kind.

More and more dogs are dying of cancer due to fertilizer and insectacides being used on lawns. Because they walk on the grass it is aborbed through their paws. I think you should probably consider this possibility with your dogs. Someone in the area may have been spraying or fertilizing at that time and both your dogs were exposed.

Dogs also eat some of the strangest things no matter how rotten & disgusting it is. So another possibility would be that they both ingested something that was either poisoned on purpose or something just plain rotten to the core. I had a dog one time that ate rancid bacon fat & that just about killed her. She also ate raccoon shit, mouse poison, dirty condoms, rubber fishing worms ….. The list goes on. She spent alot of time at the vets !!!

Ruth asks…

My yorkie terrier fell off the bathroom sink. She had a seizure. What kind of seizure was it?

My Yorkie is getting over the pet food recall poisoning. She used to eat Old Roy and it almost killed her. Making her kidney and liver almost fail. She’s better now with medication but suffers the damage it caused. Her kidneys, liver and heart are enlarged from this. Last night she slipped in the sink and fell off to the floor. I scooped her up but she started seizing within 20 seconds. Foaming at the mouth. I held her and it made her stop shaking. It was over in about 4 minutes. The foam stopped. A month ago she seized where her whole body went ridged but no foam. Then again 3 days ago. This seizure was different. What causes a dog to foam at the mouth when having a seizure?

Brian answers:

If your dog has liver failure, then the seizure is most likely from that and the reason she fell off of the sink (why was she on the sink?). When an animal has liver failure, thier liver does not properly remove toxins and those toxins build up in the blood and brain, which can cause a seizure (hepatic encephalopathy). She may also have a seperate seizure disorder.
The pet food did not cause heart failure (large heart), that was probably a problem she had before the dog food poisoning.
Dogs (and people) foam at the mouth during a seizure because the facial muscles tense up and the salivary glands hypersecrete, but this may not always happen and should not be an indicator of seizure sevarity.

Taurine is an amino acid which is important for myocardial development and used to be related to dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs and cats before pet foods were properly supplemented with it. While it is important for myocardial and neural function, taurine is not a remedy or treatment for seizures or heart failure.

This is serious matter in which you MUST discuss with your veterinarian.

Lizzie asks…

How can I survive since I put my dog in sleep? Please Help me……………?

Day before yesterday I had to put my 13 year old dog in sleep because he was sickfor the past 3-4 months he had an enlarge heart but he was on medication but lately he stoped eating completely and he was very week and slow in walking or doing anything ( eventhough he was able to response to us) he was dignosed with abnormally high kidney failure. (that made him loss of appetite) and his liver was not good too his vet said he can’t to much about it because his kidney funtions are not good at all before he died he started throwing up a lot ( all uria, toxin came out)vetsaid the only thing they can do is keep him in the hospital for few days and they can give him fluid but he was never going to be recover(unfortunately) then we had to take that painful decision to put him down:( I feel guilty now eventhough I know I did the right thing best for my dog) and I am very heartbroken to loose him my each day is though to deal with. How can I survive? Am I gulty for killing my dog? Please help.

Brian answers:

You aren’t guilty. You did something good for him. YOu ended the pain. If he could, he would say thank you. He’s in a better place now. Don’t go out and get another animal to replace him, that will only make things worse. Just try to continue doing your daily routine. Don’t forget about him, but don’t let him be the only thing you have on your mind. In time, you will be able to look back and think of only the best times you guys had.

Your Questions About Kennel Cough Treatment Robitussin

Sandy asks…

Is there a home treatment of natural antibiotics for dogs for kennel cough?

I just got a puppy from the pound and he had kennel cough, I took him back and they said that there is no treatment for this. They did give him antibiotics for a possible secondary infection but kennel cough has to run its course much like a humas virus has to. They did say I can use Robitussin DM for the coughing symptoms. The puppy is fine but now my older dog has it, the vet said we have to let it run its course but she looks so miserable. I am giving her robitussin but I want to give her a boost of natural antibiotics that are safve for dogs. I did get some drops from the health food store but they do not have any antibiotic properties.

HELP! Thanks

Brian answers:

With the rubitussin it should only last a few days. I do use lysol spray all around the house. They will sneeze when you first spray it.
